About

This is the original League Family cemetery in Southern Greenville County. Joel and Joab League (brothers) settled in Greenville in January of 1783 from Amelia County Virginia. Their land consisted of approximately 1,000 acres. We believe there are 25 Leagues buried in this cemetery. The Leagues were opposed to slavery so they tended the land themselves. Joab was a founding member and deacon of Clear Springs Baptist Church where he encouraged the attendance of slaves at church services. He taught slaves to read the Bible and eventually helped them build their own church. Generations of Leagues have since moved into downtown Greenville and Travelers Rest assuming leadership roles in business, community and government.
